About this book

Seeds of Michigan Weeds by W. J. Beal describes seeds and considers both the disadvantages of weeds and some small benefits of their presence. The account notes that some weeds injure stock through barbed awns, while others injure wool or affect the quality of dairy products. The discussion of benefits says that weeds plowed under add some humus and fertility, though much less than clover or cow peas.

The explanation of weed persistence includes the great vitality of seeds and reports actual testing of survival when buried in soil for at least thirty years. The description of Crimson Clover records seed colour, shape, surface, and the position of the scar.
