About this book
Gregory of Tours lived from 538 to 594 and was a product of central Gaul. In one passage of the History of the Franks, the people of Tours and the people of Poitiers argue over the body of a dead bishop. The body is placed in the middle, the doors are barred, and both peoples guard it. The people of Tours carry it off in a boat down the river Vienne.
Elsewhere Gunthram is carried along by a swift current until a bystander stretches out a spear and brings him ashore. Childebert is angry and sends Gundulf to a place. Chilperic goes to Paris the day before Easter, and the text mentions a compact between him and his brothers that none of them should enter Paris without the consent of the others. The introduction says the work must be read with allowance for error and prejudice in its statements of fact, and calls it a landmark in European culture.
