About this book
Home Lights and Shadows is by T. S. Arthur, and its title page gives New York and 1853. The preface says that love makes the home-lights and selfishness the shadows. The contents list gives titles such as, among others, Rights and Wrongs, The Humbled Pharisee and Romance and Reality.
A character named Mr. Uhler excuses his conduct, to the end, on the ground that he wasn't going to tie himself down like a galley slave to the oar. Mrs. Leland is taught by sad experience the folly of any weak departure from what is clearly seen to be a right course of action. Mr. Morton says he owes some men, and that a picture, they say, will bring a hundred and fifty dollars.
