About this book

The Two Wives, or Lost and Won, is a book by T. S. Arthur, with Philadelphia and 1851 on its title page. The preface says the story is intended to show the power of tender, earnest, self-forgetting love, in winning back from the path of danger a husband whose steps have strayed, and who has approached the very brink of ruin. The preface also says the story is intended, by contrast, to exhibit the sad consequences flowing from a want of these virtues under like circumstances.

A character named Mrs. Wilkinson asks, "You are not going out, John?", looking up from the work she had just taken into her hands. Wilkinson mutters, half aloud, that he is afraid he has taken too much of Elbridge's wine, and that a little affects him. Wilkinson urges his friend to resolve to rise out of the horrible pit and miry clay, and Ellis says impatiently that this is impossible.
