About this book
Home Taxidermy for Pleasure and Profit is a guide for those who wish to prepare and mount animals, birds, fish and reptiles for home, den or office decoration, by Albert B. Farnham, taxidermist. The contents list chapters on the history of the art, outfit, tools and materials, panels, shields and mounts, field work and collecting, scientific skins, mounting small, medium and large birds, and fur rugs and fur robes.
One passage on the history of the art mentions animals preserved in ancient tombs, says the first attempt at stuffing and mounting birds was reportedly made in Amsterdam in the sixteenth century, and notes that the first volume of instruction in the United States appeared in 1865. Another, on a small animal, describes filling it with chopped tow, placing a cushion at the hips and shoulders, sewing up the opening and shaping it by hand. A further passage turns to game laws and the sale of prepared heads.
