About this book
Practical Taxidermy, by Montagu Browne, is a manual of instruction to the amateur in collecting, preserving and setting up natural history specimens of all kinds. A chapter upon the pictorial arrangement of museums is added, and the second edition is revised and considerably enlarged with additional instructions in modelling and artistic taxidermy.
The text says that in the deserts of Africa the preservation of the body is secured by burying it in the hot sand. The text says the Egyptians also devoted their energies to the preservation of those things more intimately connected with the theme, namely, mammals, birds, etc. For fish, the text says plaster of Paris, which must be mixed in readiness, is poured in the skin to fill out every part, and the whole fish is turned over to show its proper side and rapidly patted into shape, before the plaster has time to set.
