About this book
Dickson McCunn, a newly retired Glasgow grocer, sets off on a modest walking holiday through the Scottish countryside and blunders into something far larger than he bargained for. In a lonely house near the coast he finds a Russian princess held prisoner, hunted by Bolshevik agents who plan to arrive by sea. McCunn is no hero by trade, yet he throws in his lot with a wandering young poet and the Gorbals Die-Hards, a ragged band of Glasgow street boys with more courage than sense. John Buchan wrote it as a romp, a fairy tale dressed in tweed, and it launched a character he carried across two more books.
