About this book
Hymn Stories of the Twentieth Century is by William J. Hart, a member of the Hymn Society of America and the author of Unfamiliar Stories of Familiar Hymns. The foreword says the most important musical feature of any service of worship is the singing of hymns by the congregation. A chapter called Let's Sing quotes Dr. Arthur John Gossip as saying that congregational singing, as we know it, we really owe to Luther and to Calvin.
Dr. James Moffatt is quoted as calling William Cowper the greatest English poet of his age, and the text adds that this same writer gave us some of our most cherished hymns. Among the hymns richly cherished and frequently used in worship, the text names the one which deals with Divine Providence: God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. Telford is quoted as calling a hymn one with an extraordinary history of blessing ever since it was written.
