About this book

Returning to Kyoto, a samurai hopes to repair the harm caused by leaving his first wife for a more advantageous marriage. His late arrival at their old house begins a reunion whose warmth gradually takes on an unsettling meaning. This opening tale gives Lafcadio Hearn's Shadowings its blend of personal regret, remembered affection and supernatural unease.

Elsewhere, close attention to Japanese language and custom takes the place of the ghostly encounter. Hearn explains how personal names may record birth order or season, express hopes for long life, or suggest qualities associated with animals and plants. The contents also include studies of cicadas and old songs, followed by pieces on dreams and other imaginative subjects. Readers can move between stories and cultural essays, observing how a household scene, a familiar name or a small creature becomes material for reflection.
