About this book
Incognita: or, Love & Duty Reconcil’d is presented as A Novel by William Congreve. A note addressed to Mrs. Katharine Leveson says that a clear wit, sound judgment and a merciful disposition are things so rarely united. The preface says the scene is continued in Florence from the commencement of the Amour, and that the time from first to last is but three days. The writer calls the work an Essay begun and finished in the idler hours of a fortnight’s time.
Aurelian was the only Son to a Principal Gentleman of Florence, whose Indulgence prompted and whose Wealth enabled him to bestow a generous Education upon his Son. A woman's thoughts come in Favour of the supposed Aurelian, and she reflects upon his Discretion in deferring the Discovery of himself. Hippolito, in such Concern that he could not speak, is busily employed in rubbing and chafing a woman's Temples while others endeavour to restore her Senses.
