About this book

Strong as Death, by Guy de Maupassant, is set out in Part I and Part II, each divided into chapters. Chapter I of Part I is headed A Duel of Hearts and describes broad daylight streaming into a vast studio through a skylight in the ceiling. Olivier Bertin draws off the rings one by one, and as the wedding-ring falls he murmurs smilingly that the law should be saluted, while the Countess, slightly wounded, says Nonsense.

A spaniel, slender, white and red, is trying to rouse three big beasts which do not wish to get up, and Annette, from her window, cries Fetch them, Julio, fetch them. A speaker says that three months were quite enough for you to love her more than you love me, whom you have known for twelve years. A man implores Any not to abandon him, in his infinite distress.
