About this book

Writing as Ohiyesa, Charles A. Eastman recalls a Santee childhood shaped by family care, outdoor observation and the lessons of older relatives. His early memories center on Uncheedah, the grandmother who cares for him after his mother's death. She makes his clothes and moccasins, prepares his food and teaches him to recognize birds by their calls. The boy's developing senses and memory become part of his account of how children learn through watching animals and imitating adults.

Domestic scenes give these recollections much of their character. Beside a winter fire, an uncle explains the meanings of feathers, Uncheedah repairs snowshoes and Aunt Four Stars beads moccasins. Eastman's affection for his dog Wabeda appears in a shared effort to protect a treasured bone from a coyote. Alongside games, family traditions and camp life, these small incidents offer readers a personal account of Santee customs and of the relationships that make up a child's world.
