About this book

An oak-board cradle, a grandmother’s songs and the sounds of woodland animals begin Charles A. Eastman’s recollections of Dakota childhood. He describes early care, outdoor learning and the close attention children paid to their surroundings. The first part moves through hardship, a sugar camp, games, hunting lessons and evenings in the lodge, giving everyday activities a place beside family memories.

The second part turns to stories of children and community life. Winona’s naming brings relatives together for a feast and gifts, while her upbringing connects family teaching with practical work and stories passed down by grandmothers. Published in 1913 for young readers, the volume combines personal recollection with accounts of customs. Its opening directly challenges hostile stereotypes, making it useful for readers interested in how Eastman presents Dakota homes, education and shared responsibilities.
