About this book
Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains by Charles A. Eastman has contents naming Red Cloud, Spotted Tail, Little Crow, Tamahay, Gall, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, among other leaders. The chapter headed Red Cloud says that every age, every race, has its leaders and heroes, and that there were over sixty distinct tribes of Indians on this continent. The chapter on Red Cloud describes him as a modest and little known man of about twenty-eight years when General Harney called all the western bands of Sioux together at Fort Laramie, Wyoming.
Sitting Bull is quoted as saying that only seven years ago a treaty was made by which they were assured that the buffalo country should be left to them forever. The text says Crazy Horse led his forces in the field, while Sitting Bull applied his energies to state affairs. Old chiefs are described as cautioning their people to be patient, for, said they, the land is vast, and both races can live on it, each in their own way.
