About this book

Writing as Laurence Hope, Adela Florence Nicolson presented these passionate poems as renderings of verse from India, though most are her own invention. Drawing on the landscapes of the North-West Frontier and the imagery of Persian and Sufi tradition, the poems return again and again to longing, forbidden desire, separation, and the ache of a love that cannot last. The best known, the 'Kashmiri Song' with its cry of 'Pale hands I loved beside the Shalimar,' was set to music and became hugely popular in Edwardian drawing rooms. Sensuous and melancholy, the collection gave English readers a heady, romanticized vision of the East while quietly voicing a woman's frank feeling. This free PDF and EPUB edition gathers the complete sequence of lyrics.
