Archibald Moffam is amiable, penniless, and hopelessly in love with Lucille, whose father happens to own the very New York hotel where the young couple lives. Daniel Brewster, that formidable millionaire, cannot abide his idle English son-in-law, and Archie's every attempt to prove his worth ends in fresh catastrophe. He backs the wrong prizefighter, tangles with modern art, mislays other people's money, and generally leaves a trail of comic wreckage across the Cosmopolis. Wodehouse assembled the 1921 novel from a run of linked magazine stories, so it moves at a brisk gallop from one scrape to the next. Sunny, silly, and endlessly good-natured, it shows the author perfecting his art of the lovable bungler.
