About this book
Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion is a book by the social psychologist Robert Cialdini, first published in 1984. It sets out to explain why people say yes, and organises the answer around six principles of persuasion: reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking and scarcity.
Cialdini backs each principle with experiments and with examples drawn from sales, fundraising and advertising. The book is read both by people who want to influence others fairly and by readers who want to recognise when these techniques are being used on them.
