About this book
Instinct, by George O. Smith, opens with the line that you can keep a good man down if you have enough headstart, are alert and persistent, so long as he limits himself to acting like a good man. Huvane tells the chief, Chelan, that Terra is at it again. Chelan says he admires their tenacity and their ambition, but that boiled down into the self-esteem of a single race he does not admire them any more and is simply scared.
Chelan says that they only want to understand your kind, and tells one he addresses as Terran that the Universe is a vastness beyond comprehension; the reply is "Nuts!" Chelan shook his head and directed, in his own tongue, "Take him away." Jerry Markham envisions himself sauntering down the sidewalk, and his eyes see Sally running toward him.
