About this book
Inventors at Work, with Chapters on Discovery is by George Iles, author of Flame, Electricity and the Camera. The book is copiously illustrated and is dedicated to Josephus Nelson Larned. Its contents include chapters on form, explaining why a joist is stiffer than a plank, how the girder developed from the joist, and how railroad rails were designed and tested by P. H. Dudley.
One passage follows the improvement of rails from strap iron to steel made by the Bessemer process, up to the track indicator that Plimmon H. Dudley invented in 1880. A chapter titled Observation lists topics such as what to look for, how lenses reveal worlds great and small, and an engineer taught by a bank swallow. Elsewhere the book discusses the Carnegie Institution and the part it may play in the science of the twentieth century.
