About this book

Theodore Low De Vinne's contents list chapters on the different methods of printing, antique methods of impression, image prints of the fifteenth century, printed and stenciled playing cards, the Chinese method, early printing in Italy, the introduction of paper in Europe and the book-makers of the Middle Ages. Further chapters take up block-books, the Donatus or boy's Latin grammar, the Speculum Salutis, and the legend of Lourens Janszoon Coster.

One passage quotes the inscription of a book of figures showing the actions of Alexander, credited in that inscription to Allessandro Alberico Cunio and his twin sister Isabella, both sixteen. It says the book was bound in thin plates of wood covered with leather, and that the ink was a pale, faded blue. Elsewhere the author says early printers regarded their method of making types as a meritorious and original invention.
