About this book
Jasmin, with the subtitle Barber, Poet, Philanthropist, is by Samuel Smiles. The text places the birth of its subject in a little room haunted by rats, on the morning of Shrove Tuesday, the 6th of March, 1798.
The text says the parents had considerable difficulty in providing for the wants of the family, in food as well as clothing. The text reports a reviewer saying that the Gascon patois was peculiarly expressive and heart-touching, and that Jasmin is what Burns was to the Scottish peasantry. The text compares Jasmin in some respects to Allan Ramsay, a barber and periwig-maker, whose Gentle Shepherd met with as great a success as Jasmin's Franconnette. The text includes verse in which an old man bearded to the waist now stands before the throng as the Black Wood Ghaist.
