About this book

Sixteen-year-old Jean has scrubbed the kitchen floor of the Lazy A ranch and left a loaf of gingerbread to cool when Lite Avery finds Johnny Croft dead on that same floor. Lite has just watched Jean's father, Aleck Douglas, mount in haste at the corral and tear off down the trail, and after the inquest Aleck rides back to town as a prisoner beside the sheriff, an old friend of his.

Later Jean doubles for the screen actress Muriel Gay, doing the wild riding scenes in a blond wig for a picture company that works around the Lazy A. She insists on real bullets where blanks were meant, to the quiet alarm of the actors playing villains, and at night writes her own melodrama of ghosts and Indians with Lee Milligan cast as the villain.

Beneath the filming runs her real undertaking: finding out what happened to Johnny Croft, a search that turns her thoughts toward her own uncle.
