About this book
George Adam Smith's Jeremiah is the Baird Lecture for 1922, in a New York edition of 1924. The contents list a dedication, a preface and a preliminary section, then lectures including The Man and the Book, The Poet, The Prophet: His Youth and His Call, The Prophet in the Reign of Josiah, Under Jehoiakim, To the End and After, and The Story of His Soul.
In one passage Smith argues that the contents of the Book of Jeremiah grew gradually, noting that the title in the first chapter covers only the prophet's call or at most a few oracles, and that the historical appendix carries its history to 561 B.C. at least. Another says that once the exile he had pronounced upon his people had come, Jeremiah's spirit is free to look beyond it, and he utters predictions of a future for both Israel and Judah. Numbered notes compare the Hebrew text with the Greek and Syriac readings.
