About this book
The Preacher and His Models, by James Stalker, is headed "THE YALE LECTURES ON PREACHING, 1891". The lecturer says the population has been increasing fast, but churches have multiplied at least twice as fast. The lecturer adds that even in a great city like Glasgow there is a Protestant church to every two thousand of the population.
The text says that Isaiah describes the true prophet as one who has the tongue of the learner, not of the learned, as the Authorised Version gives it. The lecturer says that what was truth for yesterday may be falsehood for to-day, and that only he is a trustworthy interpreter of God who is sensitive to the indications of present providence. The lecturer says it is marvellous how soon the measure of a man is taken, how he finds his level in the community, and people know whether he is a large or a petty man.
