About this book
Beside the Kennett, the marshy fields and decaying buildings of the Moors provide a bleak setting for Jesse Cliffe's early life. Mary Russell Mitford introduces a boy of about fifteen or sixteen who has grown up under parish care and repeatedly escaped the workhouse. The farm's regular occupant, Daniel Thorpe, tends its fences, ditches and bridges, while Jesse claims a less official place in this isolated landscape.
The narrative moves from close observation of rivers and meadows to the treatment of a vulnerable child whose desire for freedom defeats institutional discipline. A later passage shows Jesse searching for wild plants to fill Phoebe's garden, bringing a gentler activity into view. Readers interested in English country life will find both detailed scenery and an account of how parish authorities respond to a child they regard as troublesome. The pastoral setting gives the story room for beauty as well as hardship.
