Jimmy Kirkland and the Plot for a Pennant

Jimmy Kirkland and the Plot for a Pennant is by Hugh S. Fullerton. The little volume is dedicated to Charles A. Comiskey, the man to whom, more than all others, the honesty and high standard of professional baseball is due. The contents list names, among others, chapters titled Panthers or Bears, A Miracle Called McCarthy and Hope for the Bears. Umpire Maxwell announces that McCarthy is batting for Holleran, that McCarthy will play third base and that Pardridge will play in left field.

The seventh inning starts with the Panthers leading 3 to 1, and the Bears seemingly beaten beyond hope of recovery. A man the girl calls Larry says she may tell her uncle, with his compliments, that he will continue to play with the Bears to the end of the season, and that in spite of the uncle and his dirty work they will win that pennant. McCarthy is feeling deadly weary after the racking ride in the automobile, the injuries received at the hands of Edwards and his prize-fighter employe, the loss of sleep and the anxiety, added to the strain of the game.
