About this book
A visitor with two small children interrupts the orderly morning of a solicitor's office. Ruth Honeywill needs to speak to William Falder, a frightened young clerk, about leaving a dangerous home. Their urgent private plans sit uneasily beside the firm's rules, accounts and routine paperwork. John Galsworthy builds this 1910 play around the distance between a person's circumstances and the official judgment passed upon them.
Across four acts, the setting moves from the office to a courtroom and prison, then returns to the workplace. A forgery case brings arguments about responsibility, emotional strain, mercy and deterrence into direct conflict. The managing clerk Cokeson's concern for people contrasts with the authority of professional rules. Readers interested in social drama will find a compact study of how employers, advocates and prison officials understand the same vulnerable person in different ways.
