About this book
John Bull's Other Island is a work by Bernard Shaw, headed ACT I, ACT II, ACT III and ACT IV. Act I describes Great George Street, Westminster, as the address of Doyle and Broadbent, civil engineers. The firm consists of Mr Lawrence Doyle and Mr Thomas Broadbent, and the partners are described as bachelors and bosom friends.
A character named Broadbent says that he is an Englishman and a Liberal, and that he is going to develop an estate for the Land Development Syndicate, in which he is interested. A character named Tim, asked whether he knows the English plan, answers that it is to take all you can out of Ireland and spend it in England. A character named Larry asks what it matters where an old and broken man spends his last days, or whether he has a million at the bank or only the workhouse dole, and says it is the young men, the able men, that matter.
