Leaving the road between Roxbury and Jamaica Plain, the young seller slips into a deep hole and keeps falling until he begins to rise toward the other side of the globe. He emerges in a country he believes to be China, carrying a bundle of fresh Boston newspapers that may prove unexpectedly valuable among English and American readers in Canton.
Thomas M. Clark tells this children's fantasy through John's own brisk account of danger, calculation and quick decisions. The adventure turns an impossible passage through the earth into a practical problem: a later attempt leaves John swinging back and forth, then suspended at the centre. A pocket lantern, matches and the movement of his cap become tools for examining his surroundings. Readers who enjoy resourceful young narrators and extravagant inventions will find both in this tale.
