About this book
Little Britain is a piece by Washington Irving. The text describes a small neighborhood in the centre of the great city of London, a cluster of narrow streets and courts of very venerable and debilitated houses, that goes by the name of Little Britain. The text says that for some time Little Britain became the great mart of learning, and was peopled by the busy and prolific race of booksellers.
The text names two annual events that produce great stir and sensation in Little Britain, St. Bartholomew's Fair and the Lord Mayor's Day. The text says that during the time of the fair, which is held in the adjoining regions of Smithfield, there is nothing going on but gossiping and gadding about. The text mentions a bitter rivalry as to the most fashionable part of Little Britain, with the Lambs standing up for the dignity of the Cross-Keys Square and the Trotters for the vicinity of St. Bartholomew's.
