About this book

L'Aiglon is a play in six acts by Edmond Rostand, translated by Louis N. Parker. The list of persons names the Duke of Reichstadt, son of Napoleon I. and the Archduchess Maria Louisa of Austria, a veteran called Flambeau, and Prince Metternich, Chancellor of Austria.

The Doctor and his son bring in a box of butterflies, and Maria Louisa explains that, when she was visiting this amiable old man, the local doctor, she saw his boy arranging these collections. Metternich tells Gentz that the Emperor recalls him to Vienna and that he is going back to-day. A speaker says they will expel Lammenais, Metternich adds Chateaubriand and a muzzle on the press, and the Duke says there is no hurry. Metternich says they must have free hand in Italy and not so much excitement about Poland. The Sixth Act is set in the Duke's bedroom at Schönbrunn, where the walls are covered with Gobelin tapestry and many bunches of violets are scattered about.
