About this book
Chantecler: Play in Four Acts is by Edmond Rostand, translated by Gertrude Hall, 1910. The cast list names, among others, Chantecler, Patou, the Blackbird, the Peacock, the Nightingale, the Grand-duke and the Screech-owl. The cast list also names barnyard animals, woodland creatures, rabbits, birds, bees, cicadas and voices.
Characters in the play take turns saying why they do not like the Cock; a Duck says it is because, not being web-footed, he marks his passage by a track of stars, and another Chicken says it is because he has his picture painted in purple on all the plates. Chantecler says that now he shall not be killed and that he felt his strength come back when the common enemy flew across the sky. Patou says "I have within me several dogs, and there is conflict amidst me."
