About this book
An alphabetical dictionary of flowers, trees and herbs, each paired with a sentiment. It starts with Abecedary and Acacia and runs on through hundreds of entries, every one reduced to a plant's name followed by the feeling it stands for. Ivy means fidelity, Cypress means mourning, Daisy means innocence and Daffodil means regard.
The meanings range from tender to blunt. Forget Me Not stands for true love, while Basil means hatred and Hollyhock ambition. Later pages gather verse about blossoms, among it lines by Shelley from The Sensitive Plant and a Burns song in Scots about picking a posie for his dear May.
The book belongs to the old habit of sending messages in bouquets. It suits anyone curious about flower symbolism, the small details of nineteenth century gift books, or the poems that sit beside the dictionary.
