About this book
Laocoon. An Essay upon the Limits of Painting and Poetry is by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and translated by Ellen Frothingham. The translator’s preface says that a translation of the Laocoon was given to the English public by E. C. Beasley, and that the present translator wished to make a version that could be easily read by persons ignorant of any language save English. The text says that in poetry Urania is the muse of astronomy, and that in art she can be recognized only by the wand with which she points to a globe of the heavens.
The text says that a female figure resting on her elbows by the bed should have been called Cassandra, not Atalanta, and that Atalanta is the one sitting in a grieving attitude with her back towards the bed. The text relates that after his blindness, since he still continues to advise the burning of the wooden horse, Minerva sends two terrible dragons, which, however, attack only Laocoon’s children.
