About this book
The Dramatic Works of G. E. Lessing, by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, is translated from the German and edited by Ernest Bell, with a short memoir by Helen Zimmern, and it contains Miss Sara Sampson, Philotas, Emilia Galotti and Nathan the Wise. The text says that Lessing told a friend that hardly any one seemed to know at what goal he had aimed in his Laokoon. The text also says that in November 1766 Lessing describes himself as standing idly in the market-place waiting for hire.
In one scene a character named Claudia asks whether they were attacked by robbers and answers no, by hired assassins, and says Marinelli was the last word uttered by the dying Count, in such a tone. A character named Marinelli asks whether anyone ever heard that a tone of voice used in a moment of terror could be a ground of accusation against an honest man.
