About this book
A Commentary is by John Galsworthy, and the list of his works places it under the heading Short Stories and Studies, beside A Motley and The Inn of Tranquillity. One speaker, who compares people to a man on a road-mending job, says that modern life has hollowed people out and that people keep on trying first one thing and then another.
In another talk, a man says that thirteen is what he and his missus had, while nowadays three or four is as much as people put up with, and that the country has changed. One voice says Joshua made the sun stand still and calls it a great achievement, and another voice answers that it will not be done again. A speech imagines a man asking “Could I not have been granted a remedy at a price proportioned to my means?” and whether every working man whose wife leaves him must be condemned for ever after to live alone, or to live in immorality.
