About this book

Lectures and Essays is by Thomas Henry Huxley. The writer says he refused the former post point blank and accepted the latter only provisionally, telling Sir Henry that he did not care for fossils, and that he should give up Natural History as soon as he could get a physiological post, but that he held the office for thirty-one years. The writer says that at that time he disliked public speaking and had a firm conviction that he should break down every time he opened his mouth.

The text says that, without stepping beyond the analogy of that which is known, it is easy to people the cosmos with entities, in ascending scale, until we reach something practically indistinguishable from omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience. The text says that M. Renan assumes that certain notes were taken, not at the time of the delivery of the logia but subsequently, while the memory of them was living and definite.
