About this book
This edition has a sketch of the life of Samuel Rutherford and biographical notices of his correspondents by the Rev. Andrew A. Bonar, and the title page marks it as the third edition. The preface says the letters are marked by the writer's intercourse with God, and calls this the most complete edition that has yet appeared.
The life sketch mentions offers of a professorship in Holland, from Harderwyck in 1648 and from Utrecht in 1651, and a dispute in which Rutherford, among the Protestors, was opposed by his friend David Dickson. Footnotes explain words and references. One letter, headed Spiritual Sloth, Danger of Compromise, Self the Root of All Sin and Self-Renunciation, begins Much honoured Sir, Grace, mercy, and peace be to you.
