About this book
Letters on the Equality of the Sexes, and the Condition of Woman is by Sarah Grimké, and the title page says it is addressed to Mary S. Parker, President of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society. A letter headed The Original Equality of Woman says that in attempting to give views on the Province of Woman the writer feels that the writer is venturing on nearly untrodden ground. One letter says that God created us equal, created us free agents, and is our Lawgiver, our King and our Judge, and that to him alone is woman bound to be in subjection.
A letter headed Intellect of Woman says that the writer presumes it will scarcely be denied that, as a general rule, men do not desire the improvement of women. A quoted passage says that in Athens a female slave who had cause to complain of any want of respect to the laws of modesty could seek the protection of the temple and demand a change of owners. The text says that in Christian America the slave has no refuge from unbridled cruelty and lust.
