About this book
Life and Death and Other Legends and Stories is by Henryk Sienkiewicz, translated from the Original Polish by Jeremiah Curtin. The contents list Life and Death: A Hindu Legend, Is He the Dearest One?, A Legend of the Sea, The Cranes, and The Judgment of Peter and Paul on Olympus. The Hindu legend Life and Death describes two regions lying side by side, as it were two immense plains, with a clear river flowing between them.
A speaker recalls sojourning on the shore of the Pacific Ocean in a place called Anaheim Landing, in the society of some sailor fishermen, Norwegians for the greater part, and a German. The speaker says the cause may be a sunrise or a sunset which calls to mind a dawn or an evening at home, or some group of trees which call to mind remotely the native village, and that at such moments an immense, irresistible sadness seizes hold on the heart.
