About this book
Light Come, Light Go takes gambling, gamesters, wagers and the turf as its subjects, as the subtitle states. The contents list the capriciousness of fortune, the importance of small advantages at play, an extraordinary run at hazard and long sittings at the card table. The account describes Mr. Meggot as a gambler at heart who gained some mastery over his passion for play only late in life.
The gambling account attributes a player’s great losses mainly to paying his own gambling debts while opponents were not always equally scrupulous. The account describes police enforcement on Parisian racecourses, where anyone found openly making a bet was arrested and habitual frequenters expressed great dissatisfaction.
