About this book
Joseph Strutt's book covers rural and domestic recreations, May games, mummeries, shows, processions and pageants, according to its title page, and carries one hundred and forty engravings selected from ancient paintings. This is a new edition of 1845 with an index by William Hone; an advertisement notes that earlier editions appeared in 1801 and 1810, the year the author died.
The hand-ball chapter cites Homer's princess playing with her maidens and Herodotus, who gives the invention of the ball to the Lydians. A list of ball games includes stow-ball, pall-mall, club-ball, cricket, trap-ball and tip-cat. Elsewhere the book names card games such as Picket, Ruff and Basset, and a passage on horse-racing records a bell as the prize, with a change dated April 23, 1624.
