About this book
Long Odds is by H. Rider Haggard. The text says the story in the following pages came to the writer from the lips of his old friend Allan Quatermain, or Hunter Quatermain, as he was called in South Africa. Allan Quatermain is said to have left England accompanied by two companions, Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good, and to have utterly vanished into the dark heart of Africa.
Allan Quatermain, the writer's old friend, goes limping up and down the vestibule in the writer's memory and stops beneath an unusually large lion skull over the mantelpiece to say "Ah, you brute!" In the story Allan Quatermain tells, the narrator takes the driver, Tom, who did not half like the business, and arms himself with an ordinary double No. 12 smoothbore. Allan Quatermain describes a lion on top of him, its great white teeth meeting in his thigh.
