About this book

The Head Girl at the Gables is by Angela Brazil. One speaker says that Vivien Forrester as head of the school would be the absolute limit, and another replies that there really isn't anybody else. A girl who advanced briskly from the rhododendron walk would have been good looking, but she was spoilt by a rather rabbity mouth and large teeth, and in her wake followed a little train of courtiers: Sybil Snow, Nellie Appleby, Mona Parker, Phœbe Gibson, and Adelaide Brookfield.

The text says that one great reason why Lorraine had not, with the rest of the school, fallen under the spell of the fascinating Russian lady was the intense affection she had formed for her art teacher. In an agitated council of three, Morland asks whether the case isn't there, and Claudia answers that she hunted for half an hour round the cave. Lorraine says she is terribly afraid it is Madame Bertier, and that she believes the lady is mixed up in a very queer piece of business.
