About this book
The title page reads Macleod of Dare by William Black, author of A Princess of Thule, The Strange Adventures of a Phaeton and A Daughter of Heth. The contents list, among others, chapters titled The Six Boys of Dare, Mentor, Fionaghal, Wonder-Land, In Park Lane and A Summer-Day on the Thames.
A cab goes right over when its axle-tree catches on the curb, with a crash of glass, throwing down the horse and pitching the driver into the street. Macleod asks, "Why didn't you jump out?" after seeing that the cabman was all right, and Ogilvie did not answer. A passage says the true fashion in which Macleod showed his gratitude to his friend was in concealing his great reluctance on going down with him into Sussex. In a scene with Miss White, a grave Highland woman named Christina answers No, mem, and is described as having beautiful, clear, blue-gray eyes but no pity in them.
