About this book
Making People Happy begins in Chapter I with a bride who hammers the table desperately with her gavel in a room in pandemonium. The girl in the room is only twenty, although already a wife, and stands in her own drawing-room stoutly battling to bring order out of chaos.
A character named Mrs. Flynn says she knows the inside of almost every police-station in London, and Mrs. Carrington answers that here in America getting into jail is not necessarily a cause for pride. A man named Morton, whose face loses for a moment its wheedling amiability, asks whether a million is the owner's lowest figure and whether a sixty-days' option goes with the offer.
