About this book
Military and Religious Life in the Middle Ages and at the Period of the Renaissance is illustrated with upwards of four hundred engravings on wood. The preface names Manners, Customs, and Dress during the Middle Ages as a necessary sequel to The Arts of the Middle Ages.
A description of a church says the internal main area was subdivided into three or five naves, and that the worshippers entered by the two side portals, the men by that to the right and the women by that to the left. The text says that Christians used coffins cut out of stone at all periods until the thirteenth century, when lead coffins took their place, and that soldiers, townsmen, and country people were buried in coffins made of wood. King René’s book is called a document all the more valuable to an historian of the customs of chivalry, in that it was written at an epoch when they still existed in all their splendour.
