About this book
The Marquise de Ganges, dated 1657, by Alexandre Dumas, Pere, comes from the set of Eight Volumes of Celebrated Crimes. Toward the close of the year 1657, a very plain carriage, with no arms painted on it, stopped, about eight o'clock one evening, before the door of a house in the rue Hautefeuille.
A woman writes questions for the past (Am I young? Am I beautiful? Am I maid, wife, or widow?) and for the future (Shall I marry, or marry again? Shall I live long, or shall I die young?) and stretches out her hand to the soothsayer. The reply, signed The Spirit, says: You are young; you are beautiful; you are a widow; you will marry again; you will die young, and by a violent death. The chevalier, suspecting some ambush, opens the window and, although it was one o'clock in the afternoon and the place was full of people, jumps out of the window into the street, though the height was twenty feet.
