About this book
Mary Stuart, by Alexandre Dumas, Pere, comes from the Eight Volume set Celebrated Crimes. A passage says that, on landing on the shores of England, the Queen of Scotland found messengers from Elizabeth empowered to express all the regret their mistress felt in being unable to admit her to her presence. The messengers added that it was essential that first of all the queen should clear herself of the death of Darnley.
A passage has Mary Stuart answer that she again protested, and that the said statutes and laws were without force against her because these statutes and laws are not made for persons of her condition. The text says the letters it was alleged she had written to Babington, and his answers, were read to her, and that Mary Stuart affirmed she had never seen Babington. A passage says four couriers set out in four different directions to announce to the queen's friends her happy escape, and that they brought her a horse saddled for her.
