Marriage and Divorce Laws of the World is edited by Hyacinthe Ringrose. The preface says the purpose of the volume is to furnish to the lawyer, legislator, sociologist and student a working summary of the marriage and divorce laws of the principal countries of the world. The preface calls marriage the keystone of civilization. The text gives the number of causes for divorce in Europe as ranging from one in England to twelve in Sweden.
The text says the existing judicial systems differ greatly: in one country only the civil marriage is legal and in another only the ecclesiastical alliance is valid, and in one country divorce is allowed while in another it is denied. One entry says all suits for divorce must be instituted in the ecclesiastical courts of the Orthodox Greek Church, and that both parties are free to remarry, but the wife must wait until a full year has elapsed from the granting of a decree.
